On Friday the 9th September former High Court Justice, the Hon Michael Kirby AC
CMG, opened the new Stacks Goudkamp office at 12/39 Martin Place.
In introducing Mr Kirby the firm’s managing director, Tom Goudkamp, said that the
move to the new premises is an important one for the boutique plaintiffs’ law firm
because it showed, by ‘upgrading to business class’ , that it has not only survived
the ravages of the recent tort law reform but has actually flourished, thanks largely
to the firm’s brilliant lawyers, its culture and it’s excellent reputation in the
area of personal injury law.
In his witty and entirely engaging response Mr Kirby told the guests that he started
his legal career as a personal injury lawyer in the workers compensation area and
that it taught him the importance of showing injured clients respect and treating
them with compassion.
He advised that lawyers’ motivation should not be fees but the quality of the services
they can provide to those who need them. He also said the 3 important things to
remember in preparing cases for trial is ‘thoroughness, thoroughness and thoroughness’.
He praised Stacks Goudkamp on its move to the prestigious new location and its work
for the injured. He recounted some of their cases which have gone to the High Court
including Rogers and Whitaker, Ryan v Pledge and Ghantous and Hawkesbury City Council.
To commemorate the occasion Stacks Goudkamp have named their conference room ‘The
Michael Kirby Conference Room’.
