Director
Stacks/Goudkamp
Martin Place, Sydney
Ian specialises in Compensation Law, handling work incident, public liability, motor
vehicle incident, medical negligence and superannuation claims for individuals in
New South Wales and overseas. He also conducts some commercial dispute matters.
Originally from north east England, Ian gained his law qualifications in Liverpool
(UK) and began working for the Port of London Authority, specialising in Maritime
Law, where he handled commercial, industrial and insurance dispute matters. Arriving
in Australia in 1977, Ian worked for Hunt and Hunt Solicitors, followed by Michell
Sillar, then Gadens Lawyers, before joining the Stacks team in 1996 and becoming
a Director in 2003. Regarded as something of a legal guru by his peers, Ian has
now been practicing law for 37 years.
The father of two adult children and grandfather of 2 girls, Ian loves nothing more
than pottering around the harbour on his boat. He also enjoys travelling. Outside
the office you may also find him swimming, bushwalking or skiing (preferably in
Canada!).
Having acted both for and against large insurance companies, Ian has an excellent
knowledge of all aspects of Compensation Law. He has worked on many significant
cases during his career. Among Ian’s most challenging and unusual matters were claims
made by various businesses that were victims of the Thredbo Disaster of 1997.
Ian has a current UK Practicing Certificate. He has run many cases for English clients
who have been injured whilst in Australia. Ian has also conducted matters for clients
in Turkey and New Zealand.
Ian is an enthusiastic supporter of alternative dispute resolution procedures and
was recently accredited by the Law Society as an expert in Dispute Resolution. This
is in addition to his accreditation as a personal incident specialist, which he
has held for 17 years.
A patient solicitor, Ian takes the time to really listen to his clients and involve
them in the legal process.
